Description
You and two of your friends will have the rare opportunity to spend a day as the Ben Taub ER Medical Director and oversee operations while treating the sickest patients in Houston’s busiest ER! This unique shadow opportunity provides the lucky winner insight into the “the day in the life” of an ER doctor, teacher, and administrator as you follow Ben Taub’s Director of Operations and oversee the ER operations while evaluating and treating patients.
The Ben Taub ER is a level one trauma center and evaluates and treats over 100,000 patients each year which is more than 300 patients daily. Ben Taub General Hospital also provides more than 60% of the clinical education for the Baylor College of Medicine Residency Training Programs.
A shadow shift is a great opportunity to observe all the different specialties of medicine (ER, Trauma, Surgery, Internal Medicine, Radiology, ENT, and Orthopedics) and the different roles of the health professionals (nurse, doctor, physician assistant, and paramedic). This experience also offers insight into specific interests like forensics (GSW, stab wounds, motor vehicle crashes), information technology in healthcare, healthcare administration, the role of professors and much more. It also provides an entry into Ben Taub as a volunteer for young learners interested in future careers in health care. At the very least, young drivers will learn the dangers of drinking and driving as they see the unfortunate injuries related to alcohol and substance abuse.
Special Instructions
This incredible experience is for a total of three participants. All participants must be 16 years or older and have the emotional maturity to observe the care of critically injured patients. Participants under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult. A “Shadow Shift” is between 4-12 hours in length and scheduling is very flexible.
Donated by Angela Siler Fisher, MD, FACEP. Dr. Fisher is the Director of Operations at Ben Taub General Hospital Emergency Center and Assistant Professor of Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine. Dr. Fisher is happy to write a college applicant letter of recommendation for students that do volunteer and spend time with her in the Emergency Center. Winner to contact Dr. Fisher to schedule shift.
