He is an Illinois native, son of Lab's own Jeanne Vande Velde, and all-around nice guy.  He placed in the top five at the 2008 Tour de France, has won the World Cup Pursuit, placed second in the Tour of Georgia, and won the 2008 USA Pro Tour and Tour of Missouri.
