Black Bear Hopi katsina doll carved in the traditional Hopi style by Vernon Mansfield, one of 19 carvers featured in Traditional Hopi Katsinas, published in 2000 by Jonathan Day.   Vernon, born in 1931, is among the Hopi elders who have created a resurgence in traditional katsina carving.  Bear Katsinam appear most often in the Soyohim or Mixed Dances of springtime and are believed to be powerful and capable of curing illness. These dolls, made of cottonwood root, are given to little girls by Hopi kachinas at the winter Bean Dance Ceremony and the summer Going-Home Ceremony.  Height is 11 inches.
