Hop aboard a coal-fired, steam-powered locomotive that travels along the same railroad tracks used by miners, cowboys and the early settlers of the Old West since 1881.  Voted one of the World’s Top Ten Train Rides by the Society of American Travel Writers in 2009.  The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad winds through spectacular canyons in the remote wilderness of the two-million acre San Juan National Forest.  Full-day trip includes admission to the railroad museum and freight yard, so it’s a perfect outing for a couple of train buffs.
