Description
This piece of pottery is 12" in diameter and made by Nerissa Victorino, a member of the Acoma Pueblo. Acoma Pueblo is located in west-central New Mexico and is also named “Sky City”. Acoma Pottery is known for its very thin walls, stylistic fluted rims, and beautifully painted geometric designs. It should be noted that Acoma potters have traditionally tempered their clay with finely crushed shards of pottery, so that nearly every broken vessel is saved for re-use in this manner. This is a distinctive feature of Acoma, Laguna, and Zuni pottery, affording a strong contrast with wares from the other pueblos. The vessels made today by Acoma potters may well contain fragments of Prehistoric glaze ware, some occurring for perhaps the second or third time in an Acoma vessel. Creating Acoma Pottery is a time consuming and resource intensive venture. From collecting the clay to the final firing, the finished product is by far some of the most beautiful Native American Pueblo pottery.
