For years Gregor Turk has collected pictograms from hotels and restaurants during his travels. While the pictograms are intended to serve as efficient standardized signage, there really is no standard - even the most uniform figures vary in their dimensions, cut of the arms, broadness of the shoulders, and connectivity of the head to the body. Add to the mix variations in proportion, posture, attire, cultural signifiers, and some implausible inseams and the differences become even more pronounced. In 2008 he assembled this collection as part of a permanent public art commission for the Jacksonville Airport. In 2009 he transferred some of his favorite pictograms, from the well designed to the amusingly awkward, onto food-safe plates. They are available in sets, as installed here, or individually.
