Live Science

Science comes to life with exciting programs offered in many of our galleries. Please check at the Welcome Desk to find out what we're offering each day. Below are some of the programs you might encounter in each gallery.

Skyscraper! Achievement and Impact

Surveying

Could you measure the height of the Empire State Building with a ruler? Could you estimate the length of the Golden Gate Bridge with a chain? Have you ever measured a backyard with a satellite? Learn to become an amateur surveyor as you use actual surveying equipment, both historic and modern, to understand the evolution of this ancient science. Discover how a little math goes a long way as simple angles and lines come together to form the world's tallest buildings. AVAILABLE ON MANY HOLIDAYS AND SCHOOL VACATION DAYS. Please check at the Welcome Desk for today's schedule.

Infection Connection

What's in YOUR Water?

We can just turn on a tap and get fresh water, but many people around the world do not have that option. Learn about different types of filters used to make dirty water safe for drinking, bathing and cooking. Then participate in a water treatment method as you witness a bowl of dirty water become clean. It's not magic, it's science!

Be A Surgeon

Have you ever dreamed of being a member of an operating room team? Well, here's a chance to try it out for yourself! Help diagnose what's causing the mysterious pain in our patient's side, then join volunteer scrub and circulatory nurses and perform surgery. As you solve the challenge, you'll also learn about germs and the importance of maintaining a sterile field in the operating room.

Our Hudson Home

Floating Water: Exploring the Salt Wedge

What's a salt wedge? It's a phenomenon found only where freshwater rivers flow into the salty sea. Explore how salt wedges form in the Hudson River with this hands-on activity -- create ocean water with a little salt, then witness what happens when the mixture combines with fresh water.  Participants will learn about density and salinity and get a close look at the tools used to collect and test water samples.

Energy Quest

It's Electrifying

Take part in the most shocking experience in Liberty Science Center as you learn where electricity comes from, how it behaves, and even if people really do conduct electricity.

Down to the Wire: How Electricity is Made

How is coal, wind, water, natural gas, waves, or nuclear energy turned into electricity? And what do magnets have to do with it? Find out the secret of making electricity in this fast-paced presentation using lots of volunteers.

 Governors Hall

Sub Zero

Explore the four states of matter (solid, liquid, gas and plasma) using super-cold liquid nitrogen. Liberty Science Center educators will demonstrate how and why things change from solid to liquid to gas and even surrounded guests with a liquid nitrogen fog. Volunteers will be invited to participate in shattering colorful balloons and other plastics made fragile by the intense cold.
