Our Story

We love food!  It is our hobby, our profession and our passion, and we love getting to share this with our friends and guests at The Kitchen Table Bistro.

Since meeting while attending the New England Culinary Institute in 1995, our lives have been building towards the creation of this restaurant.  Neither of us thought we would become chefs or restaurant owners, both with degrees in biology (Lara from Presbyterian College and Steve from Bates College).  Now we can not imagine doing anything else.

Internships took us to the Napa Valley, where our careers really began to take shape.  We were immersed in the culture of food and wine, and completely fell in love with the dining experience.  It was in California while working at Bizou (in San Francisco), Brix and La Toque (both in Napa) that we began taking “notes” on how we would do things if we ever opened our own restaurant.  When our son, Gabriel, came into the picture (vintage 2001), Vermont called us home and The KTB became the reality that was our dream. 

At The Kitchen Table Bistro, and through our involvement with the Vermont Fresh Network, we focus on buying and supporting as many local farms and businesses as possible.  We change our menu often to reflect the amazing season changes in Vermont.  We tried to design the restaurant to be calming and inviting, allowing diners to relax and enjoy the food, the wine and the experience.
