Tao Te Ching - Lao Tzu - chapter 33

Knowing others is wisdom;
Knowing the self is enlightenment.
Mastering others requires force;
Mastering the self needs strength.

He who knows he has enough is rich.
Perseverance is a sign of will power.
He who stays where he is endures.
To die but not to perish is to be eternally present.

(translation by Gia-fu Feng and Jane English)

Chao-Liang Huang Bio

Chao-Liang Huang, a fourth generation calligrapher, started training for this art form at age 3 in his native China.  His great-grand-father, a Ching Dynasty government official, was a Master in the best of the Mandarin tradition.  Chao-Liang inherited the flair from his elders at a very young age.  His American education briefly interrupted his artistic endeavor (he earned a MBA degree from Northwestern University). But his heritage remained as he pursued a business career.

As a free-lance artist, Mr. Huang combines the East with the West.  His many designs reveal the occidental art and color schemes accented by Chinese calligraphic force and rhythm.  The impact of the brush strokes, either in a single character or in a series of such symbols, is highlighted by a western format, thus making this unique art form blend with the interiors of American homes.

The art of Chinese calligraphy, he believes, should be presented innovatively to prove that an acient art form can offer many possibilities for contemporary dsign and creative work.

Black Lightning: Poetry In Progress edited by Eileen Tabios

This book features Eileen Tabios (editor of The Asian Pacific American Journal) discussing the development of a particular poem(s) (featuring early drafts leading to the final draft of a poem) with some of the country's leading poets: Meena Alexander, Indran Amirthanayagam, Mei-Mei Berssenbrugge, Luis Cabalquinto, Marilyn Chin, Sesshu Foster, Jessica Hagedorn, Kimiko Hahn, Garrett Hongo, Li-Young Lee, Timothy Liu, David Mura, Arthur Sze (who also provides an introductory essay), and John Yau.

Black Lightning is the first ever publication of poetry-in-progress articles showcasing Asian American poets. Though the focus of the book is on Asian American poets, Black Lightning is also believed to be the first collection ever of poetry-in-progress articles that actually feature the drafting stages of the subject poems. An invaluable addition to creative writing and poetry literature in general.
