History of the Museums:
The Discovery Museums were founded by Acton resident Donald B. Verger in 1981. They evolved from a stated community need for interactive, educational experiences for young children and their families in a museum setting in the Massachusetts region northwest of Boston. The Children's Discovery Museum, opened in 1982, is a wonderful old Victorian House with rooms, corridors, and even closets creatively transformed into exhibit areas especially for toddlers and pre-school aged children and their families.
The Science Discovery Museum opened in 1987 and is located behind The Children's Discovery Museum. The Museum is a creative and challenging interactive experience. This architecturally acclaimed Science Museum is filled with innovative theme spaces, inviting exploration.
Mission StatementThe Discovery Museums encourage children, families, and educators to explore the wonders of science, nature, humanities and the arts by engaging visitors in positive innovative experiences.
Philosophy
The educational philosophy of our exhibit-based Museums is to provide a safe, stimulating environment in which visitors question the world around them and develop observation and critical thinking skills. Our educators foster curiosity and encourage children to form questions, then allow them to learn through guided play and exploration. Our educational programs and hands on exhibits make concepts tangible, so children of all ages are able to connect their new understanding with real life. We believe that by offering visitors a heightened awareness of science, nature, humanities, and the arts in their lives, we will be inspiring a lifelong love of learning.
