Description
"Picturesque America" was a popular, two-volume set of picture books published in the 1870s that helped Americans build an image of a unified, continental nation. Featuring the work of noted illustrators of the time, it presented views from New York to California, Maine to Florida. This hand-colored wood engraving, taken from "Picturesque America", is "Mills on the Blackstone River". It's the work of author, naturalist and illustrator William Hamilton Gibson. Donated by Stephan and Julia Brigidi of the Bristol Workshops in Photography, Bristol, RI, it's in mint condition, measuring 7" x 10". Matted in museum board, overall dimensions are 12" X 14" in its gold wood frame.
