PEGGY GYULAI, Painter of Music

San Francisco painter Peggy Gyulai creates oil paintings interpreting the lyrical qualities of classical music and jazz. She is currently the Painter-in-Residence for the San Francisco Chamber Orchestra. Her paintings are in more than 70 collections in the US and Europe including SAP America, Neiman Marcus, ARCO Chemical, and the Royal Bank of Ontario.  She has created series of paintings for the Philadelphia Orchestra and The Music Institute of Chicago.  Her current exhibition,"Big Jazz" is at the Axis Cafe in San Francisco (SOMA) through summer of 2010. Gyulai was recently featured by Don Sanchez, ABC-KGO Arts News, painting her large 16 foot painting, inspired by the music of Count Basie. 

In 2008 Gyulai's solo exhibition “Tone Interludes” introduced her recent series of jazz-inspired paintings to San Francisco's Financial District. In 2007, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art Artist’s Gallery exhibited her work in “Banzai/Godzilla: Japanese Influences on American Artists”. Gyulai also participated in The Kurt Stoekel exhibit at the deYoung Museum. 

Gyulai was Artist-in-Residence at the Philadelphia Museum of Art in the Art Futures program. She created a critically acclaimed series of large paintings commissioned by The Philadelphia Orchestra and  exhibited in celebration of their 100th season.  The Philadelphia Museum of Jewish Art exhibited her series of paintings “Dreams and Prayers” inspired by masterworks of Jewish cantorial music and contemporary Argentine composer Osvaldo Golijov.
