McManus is best known as the author of Positively Fifth Street, a book is based on his trip to Las Vegas to cover the progress of women in the 2000 World Series of Poker and the death of Ted Binion. Last November he published Cowboys Full: The Story of Poker, which documents the evolution of the a game once considered uniquely American but which now spans the world.
McManus made the quarter-finals of the 2006 National Heads-Up Poker Championship, and has reached four WSOP final tables. He has written for The New York Times, The Boston Globe, Harper's Magazine, and The New Yorker. His Esquire article on stem cell research was a finalist for the National Magazine Award. He has been the poker columnist of the New York Times as well as a history columnist for Card Player. He has spoken about the game at Yale, Harvard Law School, Google Inc., the American Bar Association, and on numerous media outlets.
