This 4' x 6' mud cloth consists of nine 5 to 6 inch strips hand-woven on a loom and stitched together. The design process can take up to a week and is accomplished by soaking the cloth in tannins, then painting traditional symbols and designs with mud and clay while white areas are bleached out to add contrast. Primitive mud cloth from West Africa is highly sought after, each being handmade, traditionally designed and totally unique. They make impressive wall hangings.
