The 223-seat Jon Hassler Theater in Plainview, located in the heart of southeast Minnesota's beautiful Greenwood Prairie, is celebrating its eleventh season of professional theater in 2010. The Theater is an affiliate of the Rural America Arts Partnership, a not-for-profit 501 (c)(3) corporation. The Partnership believes that the arts and humanities are vital to the life of a sustainable rural community. The Partnership also includes among its affiliated the Rural America Writer's Center, which offers workshops for aspiring playwrights and writers of prose and poetry, the Rural America Center for the Humanities and Community, which sponsors Up for Discussion, a monthly open forum on topics of interest to the community, and the Plainview Area History Center, housed in Plainview's oldest church building.
The JHT itself is housed in the Rural America Arts Center, a former International Harvester implements dealership. The building is one of a few thousand of similar design that populated the rural American landscape beginning in the late 1940's.
The Theater is named for famed Minnesota novelist Jon Hassler, who spent his middle school and high school years in Plainview in the late 1940's and early 1950's. Hassler's popular novel Grand Opening is based on his Plainview experience.
Rochester Minnesota is 1200 miles from New York City and the brigh lights of Broadway. The Rochester Civic Theatre is just one block from the brigh lights of Broadway too, albeit, the Broadway also known as Route 63. From the initial brainstorm and vision of its founders, RCT has evolved into one of the largest community theatres in Minnesota. And just as Rochester has grown over the past fifty-some years into Minnesota's third largest city, so has the Theatre to keep pace with the demands of its position as the "crown jewel" of the Rochester theater scene.
Since 1989, the professional artists of the Commonweal Theatre have brought to life soulful stories told with honesty and creativity. The heart of the Commonweal's programming is the Main Stage Season. This balanced yet challenging repertory is compromised of up to six plays with more than 200 performances, chosen from among the world's finest classic, contemporary, and emergine playwrights. According to Joe Dowling, Guthrie Theatre, the Commonweal is "one of the leading rural professional companies in America." And "the new theater is a fabulous place to see a play - and every seat is a good one," according to Terry Rindfleisch of the LaCrosse Tribune. These tickets were donated by KFIL AM/FM & KVGO FM Radio.
