Description

Clay Hellwig hunted wolves on Meadowbrook Boulevard! Great oral history of Cleveland Heights of a bygone era...fabulous reading for the local history buff...extremely RARE.

More About "The Proud Heritage" by Clay Hellwig, edited by Ruth Mills Robinson and Mary Emma Harris, is the 1980 followup companion book to The Proud Heritage of Cleveland Heights (Item #171).

This is a fun, off-the-cuff oral history by Clay Hellwig, born in 1890, recounting his experiences as an early resident of Cleveland Heights, which was known as "Turkey Ridge" during his boyhood years.

Follow young Clay's adventures as he stalked wolves with his shotgun in Brockway Woods (currently Meadowbrook Boulevard); swam in the quarry at what is now Cain Park; and listened to Joe, the fish peddler's, musical fish horn. As a student at Heights High, Mr. Hellwig was responsible for deciding the school's colors, black and gold.

Interesting and entertaining.
