Choose any day in July 2011 for a private narrated hike of the historic Goldsmith Woodlands and relax afterwards with a sumptuous picnic (for up to 6 people) at historic Bessie’s Point.
The Goldsmith Woodlands is a 170 acre tract, maintained by the Andover Village Improvement Society. It features an old carriage road and hiking trails that meander through dense avenues of black pine and stately rows of rhododendrons and blueberry bushes to the banks of Foster’s Pond. The property was owned for nearly 200 years by Andover’s Goldsmith family, and donated for conservation in 1974 by local legend Bessie Goldsmith.
Stories of Bessie Goldsmith’s eccentricities are told and re-told by long-time Andover residents, but she was also an accomplished gardener and an excellent cook. A 1901 graduate of the School of Domestic Science in Boston and a student of Fannie Farmer, Bessie was famous in town for her tomato sandwiches, rich chocolate cakes and blueberry confections of every kind. We’ll provide you and your guests with a picnic that Bessie would have loved!
