Description

Brazilian-born collage artist Julian Penrose draws on his own experiences for inspiration. His work has been called “ecological” because he reduced the waste stream by reusing materials from it. He creates free-standing sculptures, shadow boxes and hanging sculptural arrangements, like A Waterfall, using mostly found objects.

Julian’s artworks have been compared to Cornell’s boxes and Rauschenberg’s constructions. This is because of how he fashions unrelated items such as salvaged objects, newsprint and magazine images that, when juxtaposed, may randomly, amazingly, provide glimpses of the irony, satire, beauty, and truths of everyday life.

Now a Rhode Islander, Julian may often be found at Gallery Z on Providence's Federal Hill, helping to curate showings of art.
