This lovely painting by NJ Woods, "Ready for the Rain" measures 10" x 10".
NJ Woods has been painting professionally for more than 8 years. Her work has been shown in several galleries in Memphis and abroad, namely: D'Edge Art Gallery in Memphis, TN and Brick Gallery in Clarksdale, MS. She has shown work citywide at various places like the Nathan and Dorothy Shainberg Gallery at the Memphis Jewish Community Center and the Wings Gallery at The West Clinic. NJ has sold work in Georgia, Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas. Some of her awards include: Wings 2004 Gallery Artist of the Year, 2002 WKNO Art & Antiques Auction Blue Ribbon Awards for her painting "Must Be the Eve In Me." She haÂÂA?s been featured in several publications such as: At Home In Memphis Magazine, The Orange Mound Connection and The Commercial Appeal. NJ recently participated in a group show called Voices of a New South at the Dixon Gallery & Gardens museum.

NJ Woods grew up poor in Orange Mound and worked as a security guard and home health care nurse. But inside N.J. Woods, there was always an artist trying to get out. Inspired by her childhood visits to her grandmother’s farm in Mississippi—“I can still feel the warm eggs in my hand,” she says—she painted what she saw, no art lessons involved. Eventually, one of her home health clients, an art teacher, passed the word to a friend who set N.J. up at an arts festival, and eight years later she paints full-time in an immaculate, light-filled studio. Children playing, tiny cabins in cotton fields, fireflies, bubbles—all have shown up in her favorite work. “When I paint, I’m not aware of time passing,” she says. “I’m in total bliss. That’s how you know what your passion is.”
