Description

Enjoy the Brazilian-born Baptista's exploratory approach to music, as well as the mastery exhibited by his multi-genre integration, has impressed even the most expert of musicians. The premier jazz trumpeter Wynton Marsalis called Baptista "one the greatest musicians in the world." Baptista has performed on five Grammy Award-winning albums, including Yo-Yo Ma's "Obrigado Brasil" and Herbie Hancock's highly-acclaimed "Gershwin's World," and his other collaborations include performances and recordings with David Byrne, James Taylor, Carly Simon, Melissa Etheridge, Jay-Z and Snoop Dogg. Baptista and a trio of up-and-coming musicians sing and play an array of instruments, blending African and Brazilian folk instruments like the mbira, gimbre, berimbau and balafon with electric keyboards, drum set, electric bass and even bizarre homemade percussion instruments.

The performance is April 8, 2011 at 8pm at the Paul W. Ogle Culture & Community Center at Indiana University Southeast.
