Is your little one into trains?  Take a trolley ride to downtown Portland from Lake Oswego.  The six-mile historic rail line is along the west shore of the Willamette River.  Operated by volunteer members, the train goes through parks, by mansions, over bridges and through a tunnel.  What a fun birthday activity or family outing!
