This photograph of the entryway to the Glace Bay Synagogue in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia was taken in Fall 2007. The once-thriving Jewish community is now very small since with the closing of the coal mines and steel plant families moved elsewhere to find work. Only a small community stayed in Glace Bay, mostly seniors.

Photographer Karen Nieuwland loves to wander with her camera and catch lights, colors, details and textures. The spiritual aspect of a place is also
important to her.
