Description

This Hebrew calligraphy picture of Jerusalem is formed entirely of verses written in small letters, or "micrography." All the verses (but one*) chosen contain the word Jerusalem and all were taken from the bible (where Yerushalayim is spelled without a second letter "yod"). The script is called "Yerushalmi" and is based on that used in the Dead Sea Scrolls. Each verse begin with a . and ends with : Verses were often placed approriate to their content (e.g., a verse about the wall is found there). The semi-realistic view is from the Mount of Olives.


* with the word Mizrach ("east') forms the sun, and marks the directions of Jerusalem.

Jay Greenspan is a calligrapher, illuminator, papercutter, and sofer. As a sofer, he has repaired hundreds of Sifrei Torah, conducted dozens of Siyyumei Torah (Torah dedications), and taught/led hundreds of workshops on the art, tools, and techniques of the sofer. He has designed numerous invitations, honorary plaques, family trees, murals, limited edition prints, and many other items, including the first Rosh Hashanah and Hanukkah cards to be carried by Tiffany and Co. In addition, he has created over 3,000 custom-designed ketubot (Jewish marriage documents). He is the author of "Hebrew Calligraphy: A Step-by-Step Guide" (New York: Schocken Books, 1981). Jay is Artist-in-Residence of The Abraham Joshua Heschel School in New York City.
