The Cincinnati Reds completed what was thought to be impossible against the Houston Astros. The Reds who were picked to finish only as high as 3rd in the NL Central Division shut the doubter’s mouths once and for all with a 3-2 Division clinching win. In front of 30,000 plus fans, (14,000 walkups) the Reds went out with style when Jay Bruce bombed the first pitch he saw in the 9th inning for the walk-off solo homer.
Bruce had to convince manager Dusty Baker to put him in the lineup. He was slated to watch as the Astros tossed out the tough lefty Wandy Rodriguez. Bruce was only 1-for-15 in his career against Rodriguez and didn’t improve any. He struck out his first two times and grounded into a double play with the bases loaded in the 6th. Fortunately for Bruce went he went to the plate in the bottom of the ninth lefty Tim Byrdak was the pitcher. Bruce wasted little time as he took swung at the first pitch and drove it deep over the centerfield fence off the batter’s eye.
The celebration was unbelievable as Bruce crossed home plate. The long wait for a Reds’ October was over after 15 years. The game was a symbol of what the underdog Reds did all year, overcome the odds. The starter was Edison Volquez who returned from Tommy John surgery much sooner than was expected. Even more surprising than the early return is that he has been effective. This time he went 6 innings, walking 1, striking out 8, allowing 7 hits, and 2 earned runs.
