T.S. Monk: "Monk on Monk"
Sunday, March 6, 2011, 7pm
T. S. Monk's 80th birthday tribute to his father, Thelonius Sphere Monk, was named Album of the Year by both Downbeat and the New York Jazz Awards. Monk on Monk reintroduced audiences to the breadth of his father's genius in the compositions, arrangements and orchestration that earned him the name, “The Father of Modern Jazz.” Award-winning drummer T. S. brings to Tucson the same ten-piece jazz configuration his father famously pioneered. Anyone who fears the music might be too demanding should be reassured that a good time is in store. “This is guttural, visceral, tap-your-feet music,” Monk promises, “and we're going to swing you to death."
A Brief History of UApresents
UApresents is a department of the University of Arizona, and the campus host for international performing arts. UApresents, in its current incarnation, has served Southern Arizona for over 10 years. Previously, the organization was known as the Office of Cultural Affairs, and worked in a very similar capacity to its operations today.
Our goal is to bring the world’s finest performing arts, stemming from all genres, to Tucson and Southern Arizona. Our action to this cause is manifold. We offer school matinees for Tucson’s children, artist residencies for like-minded local artists as well as special educational opportunities for university students and the community-at-large.
From The Director
Welcome to UApresents’ 2010-2011 Season! From classical, dance, jazz and world music to family programming, spectacular events and Broadway – it’s all at UApresents this season.
We are thrilled that the most popular Broadway musical ever, WICKED, will be at Centennial Hall for a three-week run in January. UApresents and Broadway in Tucson have partnered to make this possible. Our season opens with a festive celebración of Mexico’s two hundred years of independence with Mariachi Sol de México and Vikki Carr. We are proud to host three American dance masters – Paul Taylor, Martha Graham and a very special farewell performance by the legendary Merce Cunningham Dance Company. Two ‘Special Events,’ Blue Man Group and Cirque Dreams, will be here with exciting new productions and ‘Family Fun’ with “Choo-Choo Soul with Genevieve!” from Playhouse Disney will delight. The tradition of excellence continues with some of the fi nest performers in each of our core genres including Joshua Bell, Liza Minnelli, Jazz at Lincoln Center with Wynton Marsalis, KODO and the electrifying Noche Flamenca.
From all of us at UApresents, thank you for your support. The world-class artists and extraordinary performances that comprise this season stand fi rmly among the fi nest arts presenters in the nation and your generosity is crucial to maintain this high quality programming for our community. Ticket sales account for just over half of our cost to host these great performances and cuts to state funding support for education have deeply impacted UApresents. The support of individual and corporate sponsors, grants and donations are needed more than ever before to fund the balance. Please consider a gift in any amount to help us continue to host the artists and performances that will captivate your imagination, inspire you and enrich your life.
I look forward to seeing you at Centennial Hall!
