About Me

I was not prepared for college.  Although I took Advanced Placement courses and ranked in the top ten percent of my graduating high school class, I did not have the study habits nor the discipline necessary to succeed in an academic environment.  I also did not know what to expect.  I was the first member of my immediate family to pursue a liberal arts education; as such, my family could not provide the guidance needed to start the application process and apply for the required financial aid.  Neither my public high school nor its counselors in general were equipped to offer the necessary guidance to assist me in preparing for the demands of higher education.

I was fortunate to be accepted to the University of Florida.  I can attest to how confusing and overwhelming it can be to acclimate to campus life.  When fall arrived, I made the drive from my home and moved into my dormitory with all the enthusiasm that I could muster.  Thinking college was just an extension of high school, I quickly learned the difference.  I plodded through the registration process and foolishly declared a major for which I was not well suited.  For three weeks, I attended the 7:25am classes for which I naively registered.  Soon I sacrificed class attendance for social priorities and late-night dormitory living.  I ended my first semester with a 1.625 grade point average.

After sailing through high school with relative ease, I cannot adequately express the extreme disappointment that I felt when I received my first grade report.  I needed to prove to myself that I deserved to be in college.  I approached my studies with a renewed determination.  After eight consecutive semesters (including two summer sessions), I finally graduated.

I still regard this feat as one of my greatest accomplishments to date.  As my experience illustrates, it is beneficial to have guidance through this transition.   I am confident that I can be your guide.
