Oedipus El Rey, by Luis Alfaro.
February 17-March 6- Zuzi's Theatre- 738 N 5th Avenue
A Chicano reacst of Sophocles' masterpiece by MacArthur Foundation Fellow Luis Alfaro, Oedipus is set in a California prison and the Pico Union neighborhood in Los Angeles. In Alfaro's reimagining of the Greek tragedy, Oedipus, who's been raised in a prison, is carried by "el destino" to an unavoidable appointment down California's dusty Highway 99 and later into a lonely widow's bed. Petic, brutal, and raw, Oedipus el Rey is an electrifying and unforgettable myth for the modern age!
Slumber of Reason by the Latina Dance Project
April 8-10- Zuzi's Theatre- 738 N 5th Avenue
A new dance drama based on Los Caprichos by Spanish painter Francisco de Goya. Enigmatic and controversial Los Caprichos summarized the economic and political crisis of 18th century Europe. Using humor, song, dance, text and video, The Latina Dance Project recasts these powerful images to create a new set of modern day "caprichos" exploring our contemporary demons.
Welcome to our 25th Season committed again to presenting new border plays and new or esetablished border voices. In searching for an encompassing title, we are reminded of Eric Wolf's famous book, Sons of the Shaking Earth (1962), in which he recounts the ancient prophecies of Middle America (Mexico/Guatemala). These prophecies forecast five great cataclysmic periods of time. Now, as we ourselves currently face the fifth of these great time periods, we ask, do our productions, as they reflect our current historical moment, parallel at least in metaphor the prophecies of the original Sons of the Shaking Earth? Beyond reflecting our own tumultuous times, we are proud of our 25th Anniversary season not only because all our plays are new works, but also because they embrace borders- stretching beyond to collaborations both nationally (PROP Theatre, Chicago) and internationally (El Circulo Teatral, Mexico City) - and finally, all are penned by emerging or established Arizona and Southwestern playwrights. Enjoy!
Borderlands Theater is a professional theater company recognized nationally and internationally for the development and production of theater and educational programs that reflect thediversity of the voices of the U.S./Mexico border region. Although focusing on the Latino(a)/Chicano(a) voice as the core voice to nurture and support, Borderlands works interactively with all of the voices of the region. The "border," both as physical and social landscape, is a metaphor for Borderlands' work. This metaphor allows, invites and even demands, both a regional and an international understanding of what it represents. Border people, in the best sense of the word, are citizens of the world.
Mission:
Founded in 1986 and now celebrating its 25th anniversary, Borderlands Theater's work is consistently:
*Championing the development and production of new plays while producing plays by established playwrights whose work resonates with the diversity of our audiences;
* Partnering with regional civic organizations as they integrate the arts into their programming;
*Collaborating with national and international theaters and theater organizations to foster diversity (geogarpahic, cultural and ethnic) in play development and productions.
