Bonnie Clearwater is a prominent member of the art world. After graduating Columbia graduate school in New York, she was the private curator for Leonard and Evelyn Lauder. She was the curator of the Mark Rothko Foundation. In the mid-1980s she moved to Los Angeles to direct the Lannan Foundation Art Programs and subsequently assisted Peter Norton with the development of his collection. In both these jobs, she identified and supported emerging and under recognized artists.
“In my eyes, Bonnie’s one of the prime movers in the community,” said Martin Z. Margulies, who has one of Miami’s foremost contemporary art collections that is open to the public. “She’s built that museum [Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami] from the ground up with a constituency and collection.” from the New York Times
