1997 Fume Blanc, To Kalon Vineyard, Robert Mondavi

1997 Domaine Zind-Humbrecht, Alsace Pinot Gris
For the connoisseurs among us who know that reds are not the only wines to age
well, here is a trio of spectacular, perfectly aged whites in three different dreamy
varietals.
Starting with nothing less than a Kistler Chardonnay, the Wine Spectator gave this
one 93 Points and called it: rich and creamy, with layers of fig, pear, tangerine,
melon and spice. Refreshingly elegant and sophisticated, with a long, detailed
aftertaste.
Moving on to Mondavi's premier Fume Blanc form the esteemed To Kalon
Vineyard, Mr. Parker himself gave this one 94 Points, and noted that: the 1997
Fume Blanc To-Kalon Estate I Block is produced from the oldest Sauvignon Blanc
vines of the estate vineyard. It offers a subtle, honeyed, citrusy nose, followed by
rich, medium-bodied, elegant, exceptionally long, and remarkably concentrated
flavors. The overall impression remains one of delicacy and finesse.
Finally, the Domaine Zind-Humbreht Pinot Gris an exceptional and rare Alsatian
Pinot Gris from what could be considered the best vintage for this wine of the
entire 1990's decade. All in all, a dreamy white trio indeed!
