Golf lives here! Founded at another location in 1900, Worcester Country Club contracted with renowned architect Donald J. Ross, who personally oversaw the design and construction of a gem that stretches to over 6650 yards and plays to a par of 70. One unusual feature is the five par threes, which make the course play longer and tougher than the yardage indicates.
The Opening Dedication, in 1914, featured William Howard Taft, the immediate past President of the United States. Taft, an avid golfer, had the honor of striking the first drive and authored a mean duck hook about 125 yards down the fairway. Several mulligans improved the President’s performance!
Worcester C.C. hosted the 1925 Men’s U.S. Open and the 1960 Women’s U.S. Open. But Worcester is best known as the site of the inaugural Ryder Cup, in 1927. As such, ours is the only golf club to host these premier men’s, women’s and international tournaments.
