Description

Ntozake Shange (pronounced En-to-zok-ee Shan-gay, from Xhosa, a Zulu dialect) declares herself a poet first and playwright second.


Shange is best known for her chorepoem, For Colored Girls who have Considered Suicide/When the Rainbow is Enuf, which won several awards including an Obie Award and Outer Circle Award in addition to Tony Award nominations in 1977.


Melissa & Smith is Shange's first published work. This is a first edition chapbook (#50 of 300) handbound from Allan Kornblum's Toothpaste Press, 1976.
