Artist’s Statement:

In Navajo culture, powers of the gods are beckoned in ceremonies for healing, protection and fertility. Eighteenth Century medicine men carved images of these deities into the golden sandstone cliffs of northwestern New Mexico. This photograph depicts a powerful deity dancing with birds. For more than three decades, Leon Yost has documented prehistoric rock art in North America and Australia. He has worked as a location scout for the BBC and his work is published in the New York Times, American Photographer, and Time-Life books.
