Jane Eyre Goes to the Movies

Item Number: 330
Time Left: CLOSED
Description
Join 8th Grade teacher Sherri Helvie and up to five of your guests on an afternoon trip to see the new film of Charlotte Brontë’s nineteenth-century novel, Jane Eyre.
After the film at the Del Mar Theater (on April 8th or 9th, date and time TBD), we’ll convene at Santa Cruz Roasting Company for a discussion of the film, the novel, and the various interpretations of Bronte’s text since its first publication in 1847. We’ll focus in particular on what continues to make this story so popular more than 150 years after Victorian readers were first thrilled by Brontë’s gothic novel. This event is appropriate for adults, teens, or a mixture of both.
Sherri earned her Ph.D. in Literature at UC Santa Cruz, specializing in Nineteenth-Century British Literature and Feminist Theory. Her work focused on depictions of women and their political movements in Victorian novels, politics, and popular culture.
