John Rogers: American Stories
Palmer Museum of Art
February 22–May 15, 2011
John Rogers was unquestionably the most popular sculptor of the nineteenth century, selling some 80,000 narrative figural groups in plaster in his lifetime. More than any other artist of his era, Rogers reached Americans en masse, addressing the issues that shaped their lives and defined the American experience. Organized by the New-York Historical Society, this exhibition examines Rogers’ most arresting and memorable themes: the Civil War, domestic life, and theatrical scenes from popular literary works of the day.
Special Instructions
A private tour of John Rogers: American Stories with Palmer curator Joyce Robinson for up to ten people. Must be used before May 15, 2011, during regular museum hours (weekends are fine). Should be scheduled at least 2 weeks in advance.
