Description

Framed Photograph (20-1/2" square) ~ ICEBERGS, Quanuah Harbor, Greenland
This image of an iceberg frozen into the sea ice at Quannaq harbor in Greenland was shot on assignment for National Geographic Magazine for a story that ran in the Jan 2006 issue of the magazine.  Quannaq is the northernmost year-round inhabited village on earth.  To get this picture I had to rent a helicopter for two hours at the cost of $10,000 per hour.  The funny thing is they only took cash so I had to bring $20,000 in cash with me.  The funnier thing is that when I went to a bank in Copenhagen to get the $, they only had it in $10 denominations so I literally had to bring an entire backpack full of cash with me.  When I went to pay the helicopter pilot it was just like the movies...  I handed him a backpack filled with cash, he unzipped it, looked in casually, zipped it back up without even bothering to count it and the next think I knew we were airborne.  The only drag was I had to give him my backpack.

If you go to this link and scroll to the right you can see the entire story as it appeared in National Geographic.  By far the funniest thing is that you will notice they did not even use this picture.  That's National Geographic....  totally devoted to the story, regardless of cost.
