Ray began his career in photography in 1952, when he embarked from his native New York City to Central and South America, where he lived and worked for 15 years.  His work appeared in numerous publications, notably Life Magazine. During the 1960’s he branched out into documentary film, making a number of prize-winning films, two of which were chosen for the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art.  His film “Light in the West: Photography of the American Frontier” won the Grand Prize at the Italian International Festival of Films on Art.
