Description

Have you ever seen an earthquake fault in person?  Or put your hand on one?  do you know how the ground under your house might behave in the next BIG earthquake?  Do you know what keep all those tall buildings in San Francisco from falling over during ground shaking?  Do you know where your drinking water comes from?

Geology is under everything we see (and even more that we don't see!) and has many impacts typically not thought of in our daily lives.  What geologic might you wonder about? Earthquakes, plate tectonics, bridge foundations, 130-year old dams that retain our water supply, tunnels that we drive through, land slides and why they move (and sometimes don't), volcanoes in the Bay Area, deep sea sedimentary rocks on Twin Peaks? Perhaps you wonder about other things geological?

You and three of your compatriots will spend the day with former UC Berkeley professor and current Urban parent Dr. Ken Johnson chasing down answers to your geological questions and wonderings.  Begin the day with a convivial brunch at Dr. Johnson's home where we can explore the group's geological curiosities.  The brunch discussion will chart a course through the SF Bay Area to pursue answers to your questions and examine the geology of the Bay Area and how we have worked with our geologic setting (engineering it) or how our lives have been impacted by the geology (being engineered by it).  Snacks  and drinks along the tour will also be provided.

Special Instructions

Tour will be conducted on a weekend day to be mutually agreed upon.
