"Over the years I’ve made numerous drawings and paintings of children, recording the variety of their beauty from infancy to young adulthood. Meanwhile I pursued a career in writing and illustrating for children, publishing nearly thirty books. While rendering various characters, my goal has always been to express their emotional reality and reveal each one’s defining spirit. I bring this same urgency to my portraits of children: to reveal each child’s individuality, character and suggest his or her inner life. Working from a mutually agreed upon photograph I will create a lasting image of ephemeral childhood and the enduring and unique character of your child."
