The original Sunrise Café & Bakery was opened in 1981 when the entrepreneurial chef/owner Cindy Gershen started baking fresh breads and pastries on California Blvd in Walnut Creek. The café quickly outgrew its location and Cindy opened the Sunrise Bistro as a full service sit-down restaurant to compliment the successful café and bakery.

Since 1981 Cindy and the Sunrise Bistro has not only served comfort food "like Mom used to make," but food that is delicious and healthy for you. We combine fresh ingredients and create smart recipes to avoid unnecessary salt and sugar. We do not us hydrogenated oils (trans-fats) or high-fructose corn syrup in any of our recipes. We bake our own breads, pastries and desserts, along with preparing our own jam, berry compote, and dressings from scratch. More than anything, the Sunrise is about giving the customer what they want. With healthy and wholesome menu options – you are free to make the best choices for your own well-being!
