Description

The Print Center 2007 Fine Print Edition is by accomplished Philadelphia photographer Sarah Van Keuren. Van Keuren studied at Swarthmore College and the Philadelphia College of Art (now The University of the Arts), and received an MFA from the University of Delaware. Since 1980 she has taught non-silverphotographic processes at The University of the Arts. She is the author of A Non-Silver Manual and has taught workshops across the United States and in Finland. This print has been offered courtesy of Schmidt-Dean Gallery, Van Keuren’s Philadelphia representative.

The gum bichromate process is a complex and labor-intensive 19th century technique. Coded Leaf began with a four color digital separation of a photographic negative. An emulsion of pigment and gum Arabic (a natural resin that hardens when exposed to light) was hand applied to the paper, registered with a negative the size of the final image, exposed and washed. The entire process was then repeated three more times, each time with a different pigment and separated by layers of gelatin.
