The Gardens offer one hundred spectacular acres of labeled trees and shrubs, designed gardens, beautiful flowers and sweeping lawns and are a delight any time of year. Spring features showy Dexter Rhododendrons and flowering trees, while summer boasts brilliant annuals and dazzling daylilies. Autumn highlights blazing foliage and the fall-blooming Franklinia. Winter showcases beautiful heathers, bright berries and noble evergreens. Heritage offers many excellent garden-related workshops, lectures and activities throughout the year. Other plant collections include Ilex (Holly), Syringa (Lilac), Hibiscus, Cornus (Dogwood), Viburnums and many other species of evergreens. In addition to the formal gardens, there are several miles of recreational walking trails for you to enjoy.
The Museums celebrate American culture in four buildings offering both special exhibitions and displays of the museum's permanent collections:
The J.K. Lilly III Antique Automobile Museum showcases the museum's extensive collection of American antique automobiles. From Gary Cooper's Duesenberg to President Taft's parade vehicle, you'll find an amazing array of classic craftsmanship and chrome.
The American History Museum is a replica of The Temple - the fort where George Washington awarded the first Purple Heart. It features special exhibits and highlight from our permanent collection including American military miniatures and firearms, and the exquisite bird carvings of Elmer and Cleon Crowell.
The Art Museum features the museum's working carousel which you can ride! Also housed there is a premiere collection of American Folk Art - one of the top ten in the country - and special exhibitions.
The Old East Windmill was moved to Heritage from Orleans, Massachusetts and is open on selected days to display how it was used to grind grains so critical to daily life years ago.
Hidden Hollow is a place for families to play in and explore the natural world. It features a wide range of activity areas in which families can enjoy the outdoors together. Nestled in a two-acre dry kettle hole, its unique topography offers a stimulating and beautiful outdoor setting for family discovery and learning. Hidden Hollow is one of New England’s first certified Nature Explore Classrooms, a joint program of National Arbor Day Foundation and Dimensions Educational Research Foundation. This national initiative was developed to advance the understanding and appreciation of the natural world and to provide children with meaningful and positive experiences with nature. Children can climb stepping stumps, navigate log balance beams, construct forts, create nature-inspired art, build with blocks, dig in sand, experiment with water, make music, engage in sensory investigation with plants, and more.
