Sarah Angst is an artist and printmaker who grew up in Winnipeg, Canada. She attended the University of Minnesota Duluth, and graduated in 2001 with a BFA in Art Education. She moved to Bozeman, Montana in January 2007 with her husband Tim Ford who is a realtor with Vellinga Realty. Upon her arrival she decided to focus on a lifelong dream of holding no other jobs, and living solely off her artist’s income.
When she arrived in Bozeman she fought the temptation to find a job to help pay for the expense of moving. Instead she focused on her goal and spent countless hours creating fresh pieces of art reflective of her new surroundings. She worked tirelessly to create enough artwork to take on the road and applied to every juried art fair she could find within a ten hour drive of Bozeman. She has attended many Art Fairs since then, and the public response to her work has been incredible. She is barely keeping up with the demand, and has won numerous awards.
With its graphic qualities and bright colors, Angst’s work is appealing to a wide range of people. Most of her prints are small and quaint, displaying the effortless beauty in everyday subject matter. Her biggest influence has been the Art Nouveau movement, with its flowing black contours and flora and fauna themes. Angst's images attempt to emit a calm and comforting sentiment of a simple time and a simple way of life. Many of Angst’s pieces reflect her love of nature, her passion for color, and her sense of humor.
From her original linocuts Angst has now created a wide array of handmade products featuring her images, including jewelry, ornaments, greeting cards, and giclée reproductions.
The Process
Sarah’s original prints begin with a drawing, which she transfers onto a linoleum block in reverse. She carefully carves away all the negative space using knives and gouges, leaving only the raised image. She then makes an impression of the carving, by rolling a thin layer of black ink over the block. She carefully positions a sheet of strong printing paper on top of it, and uses the back of a wooden spoon, rubbing with hard, even pressure to transfer the ink onto the paper. When the ink has dried she brings the image to life by hand painting each impression with high quality watercolor inks. Sarah’s pieces use a combination of printmaking and watercolor painting techniques; created by hand from beginning to end. Each linoleum block print is a part of an edition, telling the viewer or collector that there are only a limited amount of impressions that are made just the same. The bottom number shows the total that will ever be made to look just like it, and the top number shows where that particular impression falls into the edition. Each linoleum block print is an original work of art. For an edition of 75, the block must be rolled with ink 75 times, with each piece of paper placed on it by hand. The ink is then transferred to the paper using the back of a wooden spoon, and then each impression is carefully hand painted 75 different times with brilliant colors. Finally, each impression is signed, numbered and stamped by the artist in the order it was created.
