Beringer Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve, St. Helena, California; 1999 Napa California - Magnum
The 1999 Beringer Private Reserve is a paradigm for the argument that great wines should not be made by recipe. Because of microclimate variations on Howell Mountain in 1999, the Tre Colline Vineyard produced grapes that were riper, with more completely developed aromas, flavors and tannins than Bancroft Ranch, usually a Private Reserve favorite. The resulting wine has a rich texture, with dense cassis and blackberry fruit characteristics matched by notes of cedar spice and earth.
"Ruby-red. Highly nuanced nose combines currant, plum, smoky oak, minerals, licorice and mint. Wonderfully sweet, sappy and dense. The most complex of these '99 cabernets, with enticing flavors of currant, minerals and brown spices. Very long, slow-building finish features big but sweet and fine tannins. Suave and impressive.
Rating: 92-95"

"Complex aromas of currant, herb, tobacco, olive and cedar lead to similar flavors in a rich, concentrated yet elegant presentation. Turns smooth and creamy, with vanilla, mocha and blackberry flavors peeking through on the finish. Best from 2005 through 2014. 10,000 cases made."

"Big and oaky, as Private Reserves always are, the ’99 is a textbook toasty Chardonnay. Apple, peach and plum aromas and flavors are wrapped in a smooth, smoky cocoon. The rich and supple palate feel is a winner, the long finish still tight. Enjoyable already, but should be held for a few years."
