"New Yorkistan" is the title of the cover art for the 2001-12-10 edition of The New Yorker  magazine.  It was created by  Maira Kalman and Rick Meyerowitz who did the actual painting, and is (according to the American Society of Magazine Editors) #14 on the list of the top 40 magazine covers of the past 40 years.  It depicts the boroughs of New York CIty, as well as individual neighborhoods within the city, giving each a humorous name (a "funny mixture of Yiddush, Persian, and New Yorkisms") based on the history or geography of that area of the city, while playfully using names or suffixes common in the Middle East and Central Asia, such as "istan".   Thus the title, "New Yorkistan".   A retrospective of Maira's work is currently on display at the Jewish Museum of New York.  Working as an illustrator, author, and designer, Kalman illuminates contemporary life with a profound sense of joy and a unique sense of humor.  Rick, an illustrator for the National Lampoon, is the author of Drunk, Stoned, Brilliant Dead - a history of the National Lampoon called dazzling by the Wall Street Journal.

Note: this is a print made from the ORIGINAL ART.  It is not the image as it appeared on the cover of the New Yorker magazine with a New Yorker logo.
