Description
The Alexander Technique
- Does your back ache and do your neck and shoulders often feel stiff?
- Do you become uncomfortable when working at a desk or computer?
- Are you experiencing strain related to pregnancy?
- Are your neck, back and shoulders tense from breastfeeding and carrying your infant or child?
- Are you a singer, actor, dancer, musician or athlete and feel you are not achieving your full potential?
The Alexander Technique will equip you with skills to eliminate tension and strain. Apply it to sitting, walking, speaking, working out, playing music, lifting children - anything you do!
In a large-scale randomized, controlled study published in 2008 in the British Medical Journal, chronic back pain sufferers who took 24 Alexander Technique lessons reduced back pain by 85%.
Performers . . .The Alexander Technique will equip you with the skills to move, breath and speak energetically and without strain. You'll improve your overall coordination and prevent habitual tension from interfering with your performance.
What happens during a lesson:
- Lessons are 45-minutes long and the student remains fully clothed.
- During a lesson, the teacher's hands guide a student to facilitate achieving a coordination of the use of their head, neck, back and limbs that is more efficient and requires less strain than the coordination to which the individual has become accustomed. The teacher guides the student through a variety of commonly performed activities and movements such as sitting, standing, moving from sitting to standing, walking, lunging and bending down to pick something up. The student learns to perform these basic activities without unnecessary tension or strain while maintaining overall coordination.
- Part of the lesson also involves table work. The goal of the table work is to maintain this more open and decompressed state when one eventually returns to the standing position.
