Calexico’s freewheeling approach jibes with its origins in a street cart of the same name, opened in 2006 by three brothers from Calexico, Jesse, Brian and David Vendley. (Peter Oleyer, who oversees the kitchen, came on board shortly after.)

Last fall, the team won a Vendy Award for best street food in the city. They continue to operate the carts, now a fleet of two, in SoHo.

The Brooklyn storefront is dominated by a blood-red wall stippled for stucco effect and posted with retablos and tin crosses. Día de los Muertos-style shrines are strung with Christmas lights and stocked with a cheeky mix of folk art and hipster pop references: a painted skull, a flaming-heart-shaped mirror, a sticker for In-N-Out Burger.
