Description

Spend a day at the Sonoma County Fair Horse Races with Thoroughbred breeders Jackie and Merv Sahud. The Sahuds have been breeding and raising Thoroughbred sport and race horses for over 25 years. Oak Pond Ranch has been operating for over 100 years and is located in the Dry Creek Valley of Sonoma County.

Meet trainers, jockeys, grooms, judges, and perhaps a race veterinarian or two. The Sonoma County race course is called "little Saratoga" because it is so pretty and has a turf track. You will learn how to read the racing form, make bets, and, hopefully, collect your winnings. You will be able to wander the fair itself and see the exhibits and livestock judging. If you are an early riser, you can come to Oak Pond Ranch and meet the herd/gang, then have a ranch breakfast before heading out to the backside of the racetrack to see all the happenings prior to racing.

Special Instructions

Need to be able to walk about and not be allergic to horses or other animals. The Fair runs from July 28 to August 8 with no racing on August 2, and 3. There will be an additional week of racing from August 11 to the 15th but the Fair itself will be over. Still exciting and still lots to see. The Saluds would need at least two days' advance notice of your anticipated arrival.

Their hometown of Healdsburg, CA, is ground zero for wine-tasting as there are at least 75 wineries within a 10-mile radius. Also, the Russian River runs through town where there is fishing, kayaking, and swimming available.
