Description

Andre E. Van Opstal (1895-1986) Painter. Born in Belgium on March 3, 1895.  Van Opstal studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Art in Antwerp.  He came to the United States in 1922 following service in World War One.  After working in Philadelphia and New York City.  He moved to San Francisco.  He worked there as a commercial artist and interior decorator until the 1930's when he moved down the peninsula to Palo Alto.  During the 1960's he spent two years painting in Spain on Majorca.  A gnome-like man of 4'11", he was a highly accomplished painter of landscapes, missions, marines, and still lifes.  Van Opstal died in San Mateo, California on December 23, 1986.
