Description

Serenade or "Strummin' the Guitar"

A successful artist must not only be well versed in palette, paint, and brush, but should also have a smattering of knowledge in music, history, and literature.  In this picture, we see everything combined.  The "Bard of Avon" (being used as a hat rack) watches a young musician serenade his girl friend on their way home from the library.  This cover bears a striking resemblance to the August 30, 1924, POST cover, but styles of dress have improved, and our vocalist has traded his accordion for a guitar.  A nearby lamppost cast a warm glow on the scene, and we hope it warms the heart of our young lady as well in this midsummer night's dream.  Most models appeared in Rockwell's studio in fine attire and were given appropriate costumes for the painting, but this couple were allowed to pose in their Sunday best.

Special Instructions

If you're an illustrator or collector of illustrations I recommend that you spend an hour perusing the excellent antique and collectible prints by famous (and not so famous) illustrators from America's past available at a lovely small shop called Great American Illustrators. These include the biggies like Rockwell, Pyle, Leyendecker, Parrish, Wyeth, Wilcox-Smith, etc., but also those unsung heroes of the everyday magazines of the past century.  Great American Illustrators is known for its unusual antique illustration art memorabilia, collectibles and art studio.
