Description
This is an original 1986 Kentucky Derby Racing Program for the 112th running of the Kentucky Derby. The great Ferdinand won the Kentucky Derby that day.
It has been 25 years ago that Ferdinand, with the great Bill Shoemaker riding, captured the 112th Kentucky Derby. In the end, that meant little. He was an unsuccessful stallion and his economic value dwindled to virtually nothing. Sixteen years after he won the Kentucky Derby, he apparently died in a slaughterhouse somewhere in Japan.
It is still unbelievable today that a Kentucky Derby winner such as Ferdinand was sent to slaughter. In life Ferdinand was a champion and in death he is a hero and advocate for all horses because his story has brought awareness about the cruelty of horse slaughter and educated millions of people who otherwise would not have been aware of what happens to horses who endure the horrendous journey to slaughter.
